"If you want to produce fine wine, you have to know what fine wine is all about. So the first thing you have to do is travel and drink the world's finest wines. The second, work on your vineyards meticuously." So says Klaus-Peter Keller, the proprietor of Weingut Keller, arguably the top estate in all of Germany. And we couldn't agree more. Keller's wines are some of the most sought after, and difficult to get, wines on the market today. Jancis Robinson has described his Rieslings as the "Montrachets of Germany". Not only does he make world class dry, off-dry and sweet Rieslings, but he also makes beautiful wines from "lesser" grapes such as Sylvaner and Scheurebe. Keller also pays just as much attention and puts just as much love into his everyday wines as he does to his Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru) bottlings.
Von der fels means "from the rocks" and this dry Riesling is a blend of young vines from the Grosses Gewächs' vineyards that Keller works. The wine is highly aromatic and fresh. On the palate the wine has a razor sharp acidity with an elegance that only comes from the magic Klaus-Peter Keller can work in the vineyards. Pair this wine with a rich sauerbraten and spätzle.
“Von der Fels” is the young-vine fruit from the Grand Cru vineyards and, year after year, is simply one of the great values of not only German wine, but of white wine at large. A Riesling of pronounced limestone character.
Weingut Keller is an esteemed German wine producer located in the Rheinhessen in the municipality of Flörsheim-Dalsheim. The estate's origins date back to 1789 when Johann Leonhard Keller acquired property at the esteemed Hubacker vineyard – a classified Erste Lage by the VDP. The family-owned and operated business has been managed by Klaus Peter Keller since 2001.
The estate is best known for its range of critically acclaimed Riesling wines, and in particular its dry (trocken) bottlings, led by G-Max Riesling. This is produced from low-yielding, old vines and has received top scores from a number of critics. It is one of the most expensive dry Riesling wines in the world. Weingut Keller is also increasingly recognized for its Spätburgunder.
Riesling and Spätburgunder are sourced from from some of the top vineyards in the Rheinhessen including Grosses Gewächs from Hubacker and Bürgel in Dalsheim and the Kirchspiel, Morstein and Abtserde vineyards (the latter is sold as "Abst E®.de") in Westhofen. The estate is famously linked to the Hubacker vineyard – four hectares (10 acres) of the property have remained in the Keller family for 10 generations. The site faces south and south-east on a slope composed of limestone and marl soils. The oldest plantings of Riesling at this parcel date to 1974.
