Red Wine | Blaufränkisch | Burgenland, Austria
From Markus Altenburger:
The Blaufränkisch “vom Kalk” is a constant wine: It’s first vintage was bottled in 2006, where it was called “Ried Satz”, because the grapes where coming mostly from this vineyard. Since vintage 2014 we call it the “vom Kalk” – the hail in 2014 jumbled everything and thus there were no single vineyard wines produced, neither the big nor the small ones.
In the meantime, our Blaufränkisch “vom Kalk” is our bestseller, which is shipped to over 11 countries on 4 continents. An avant-garde globetrotter? No way. Grown on calcareous loam it is a down-to-earth type: our house wine, the neighbourhood wine, the friendship wine, one everybody wants to pour in the glass.
The wine making is frippery and the processing gets along without the help of technical or chemical tools. After spontaneous fermentation on the mash, it ripened mainly in big old wood barrels. A symbiosis: The only way the old barrels last so long is because they are always filled with wine, that’s why the barrels cannot give the wood aroma into the wine anymore and we leave the wine in there to ripe calmly.
The wine has fruit, without being too superficial and length, without being too demanding. And because it does not have a loud appearance, it is well-liked as a subtitle by-glass meal companion or just solo with a good talk or some silent thoughts.
However, two things are complete new: The closing– it is screwed out- and the clothes. As for the moment last wine, we changed it’s label. The extensive symbol on the new labels originated by pressing on the with red wine greased hands on a sheet of paper. We think it suits the artisanal wine excellent.
