La Casaccia is a family-operated, certified organic winery located in Cella Monte / Asti / Piedmont. Estate vineyards stretch over 8 Ha. concentrated in the village of Cella Monte, which stands out in the context of the enormous Monferrato & Astigiano wine district thanks to its unique volcanic soil (white volcanic chalk) and optimal south/south-east exposure.
Twenty years ago Giovanni Rava and his wife Elena Bassignana acquired an 18th century vabandoned villa named La Casaccia and gradually restored the main building and brought back into production the impressive subterranean cellar excavated into the local volcanic rock. The cellar was soon equipped with a line of stainless steel tanks and a bottling unit, and the vineyard converted to organic farming.
La Casaccia specializes in the production of Piedmont’s minor native varieties Grignolino and Freisa, and is certified organic by AIAB [Associazione Italiana Agricoltura Biologica]. Bearing aromatic resemblance as well as a genetic relation to the prized Nebbiolo variety, Freisa and Grignolino both yield light to medium-bodied reds rich in floral and spicy aromas, low in alcohol and ideal as everyday table wines.
Giovanni and Elena produce wine on their own at La Casaccia, with the periodical assistance of Dott. Giuliano Noe’; as for the chemical analysis required to ensure the organoleptic stability of the wines. La Casaccia Barbera ‘Sant’Anna’, Grignolino ‘Poggeto’ and Freisa ‘Monfiorenza’ are made from old vines [50 to 80 year old], vinified in stainless steel and fermented with ambient yeasts. The aromas found in the glass originate entirely from the native grapes and the limey soil of the Monferrato region of Piedmont.
