The fruit of Jacquesson labors was a crop of healthy, mature grapes with particular mention for the Pinot Noirs which were super successful. Reserve wines from previous 700 Cuvées complete the blend.
Disgorged in February 2021 with 0.75 grams per liter dosage, the NV Extra-Brut Cuvée No. 744 is based on the 2016 vintage. Exhibiting complex aromas of orange oil, crisp stone fruit, fenugreek and subtle hints of yellow Chartreuse, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and seamless, with terrific depth at the core, lively acids and a pinpoint mousse. Simultaneously vivid but replete with sapid nuance, this new release throws into relief all the work the Jacquesson brothers have made in the vineyards and cellar over the last two decades. Best after 2021.
The NV Cuvée No. 744 Grand Vin is a bright, taut Champagne that is going to need at least a few years to come together. This is one of the more reticent editions of the Cuvée I have tasted in a very long time. Citrus, crushed rocks and white flowers add an attractive upper register. The Chardonnay feels quite expressive today. Rating : 91+
Jacquesson has a rich and long history, but that doesn’t mean that they are afraid of modern ideas and innovation. In a break from Champenois tradition, each new release could be completely different from previous year. For example, if the Pinot Noir is better than Chardonnay one year, Jacquesson will use more Pinot Noir rather than preserving the house style at the expense of quality. The 700-series wine is the flagship, and the only wine being made every year. All of the best juice goes into this single cuvée. In exceptional years they also bottle up to four highly sought-after single-vineyard cuvées.
Sustainable farming practices are the norm at Jacquesson; no herbicides are used and rows are tilled in the spring and fall, with grass sowed in summer. When fertilizers are used, they are entirely organic. Pruning is severe for low yields, there are no green harvests, and canopy management is stressed to ensure minimal mildew and odium pressure, thus keeping spray use to a minimum.
