The grape variety "Chardonnay" derives its name from thistles. "Chardonneray" is a little bird which eat thistles. The name of this cuvée refers to Chardonnay origins.
From Frank Besson
My estate is located near the town of Jullié at the foothill of the Cru Juliénas and on the terroir of Beaujolais-Villages. We pick grapes manually in small cases of 45 kgs. Since 2010, the estate is on organic conversion in order to be coherent with our work in the vines and in the cellar. Revolted by the bad image affecting the appellation Beaujolais-Villages, I decided to innovate and produce Rosé and Blanc de Noir sparkling wines in order to prove the potential of the Gamay grapes on our granitic slopes. Elaborated with the traditional method, as they do in Champagne, my sparkling wines are aged 12 months on wooden racks in the estate in order to get the fineness of a great Champagne!
Franck Besson’s estate is located in Jullié in the heart of the appellation Juliénas, one of the finest terroir of the 10 “Crus” of the Beaujolais region. When Franck took over the estate in the 90’s he gave himself 2 objectives, bringing the life back in his soils and expressing the “chameleon” character of the Gamay grape.
Fully certified organic in 2013, his estate sees only organic fertilizer since more than 2 decades, and he is moving to biodynamic culture very soon. From the Gamay grape he makes, nearly exclusively, a fascinating range of Méthode Traditionnelle Rosé and Blanc de noir, controlling the whole process of “prise de mousse” in site.
This white wine made from the red grape Gamay is a wonderful proof of the incredible potential of this fascinating varietal. It’s not surprising then, that some region call the Chardonnay “Gamay Blanc” as the resemblance in flavor profile is stunning.
